What did the News have to say...
By Jessica Sacco
Children waited patiently to have their faces colorfully painted by Masks by Design, who donated their services for the event.
Melrose preschooler Bobby Sherburne, 4, came away with a Batman-inspired drawing. A black bat covered his forehead, its long, outstretched wings reaching down near Sherburne’s cheeks. Behind the nocturnal animal’s head sat a red/yellow moon, as if the bat had just taken flight into the night.
“I like it because he has the wings,” Sherburne said, who is also a big fan of Batman. “He’s a good fighter.”
Friends and soccer teammates from Wakefield, Kayli Porter, 11, and Maeve Recene, 10, also hit the face painting area before their game later that day.
The two girls had one side of their faces colored a deep red, with a white lightning bolt and sparkles. A black zigzag ran down the middle of their faces, and on the unpolished side, a large black “W” was drawn.
Their team’s colors are red, white and black, but for the design, the girls said it randomly came to them.
“We just thought it would be cool and it has lightning,” Recene said.
And, “we did that because we didn’t want our whole face to be painted,” Porter added.
